My Korean boyfriend was born and raised in South Korea and I was born and raised in Europe. As I tried to prepare for the difficult journey ahead – with almost 6,000 miles (around 10 000 km) of distance between our countries and expecting culture clashes, misunderstandings and language barriers – I turned to guidance online by people who had already gone through what still lay ahead for me. To my great surprise, information was either scarce or worryingly negative. Still, we didn’t even consider giving up and meeting each other in person became the most important thing in our lives. And then…

I met my Korean boyfriend

dating Korean guys love South Korean manThat night everything that could have gone wrong went wrong. My carefully perfected plan was ruined. After taking 6 hours to get there it turned out the place where I wanted to get the food had been closed for a year, the bus didn’t show up, I spent all the money on a cab fare and, on the day when it was crucial I look my best, I looked exhausted and defeated.

This late at night the airport was in semi-darkness and looked deserted. The time seemed to have both slowed down and sped up. I wanted it to pass, and yet, I wasn’t ready. Slowly, a few people gathered. Among them I saw a few black-haired heads. Asians! That was a good sign.

Finally, the gates opened and people started pouring out. And then… I saw him! I had no trouble recognizing him. After all, I haven’t done much else than stare at his photos for the last few months. He was weaving among people, and every few seconds, I would lose sight of him. He grabbed his suitcase and headed… straight towards me!

Yesterday we were thousands of kilometers apart. Now we were so close we could have touched each other. Could have, had it not been for a huge glass pane dividing the arrivals from people ready to greet them. I motioned towards the doors. Before I knew what had happened I was awkwardly hugging him. I had played this hug in my head hundreds of times. Somehow in my mind I always did it much more gracefully. But then again in my mind he didn’t have that huge backpack on.

Dazed, we both made it out, murmuring, trying to make a conversation, our hearts pounding. In the meantime the missing bus magically appeared and we settled in the seats next to each other.

For the first time I looked at him. Really looked at him. It was my boyfriend. My Korean boyfriend. My Korean boyfriend who I was seeing in person for the first time in my life. My eyes slid from his face along his arms. Muscular arms. Down to his hands resting in his lap. There was that watch, the silver watch I would recognize in an instant because it was on every photo of him I have seen. And his hands were just as manly and beautiful as in the photos.

“Is this what you want?”

I looked up to see him smiling at me. My eyes went down again to his hand but this time it wasn’t resting in his lap. It was outstreched, palm-upward, ready for me to hold it. Big smile settled in on my face as our hands wrapped around each other.

Actually, nothing had gone wrong that night.

  1. I have been surfing internet for years to meet a korean guy but haven’t found one. Could you please direct me to sites where nigerians meet korean guys. Having watched korean movies, I love their language, culture and tradition, and I will love to meet and marry a korean man.

  3. what do you mean by nigeria of all places? That’s very bad and saucy of you. You shouldn’t look down on anyone or any country. what makes You think Your country is better than mine. I don’t think You can be with any man for long with this arrogance in You. I am a nigeria lady and I am proud to be. I will get married to someone who loves my origin and everything about me. Stop rubbishing my country ,keep praying for yours coz no one knows tomorrow .

    • Maybe that commenter was just surprised that someone from such a faraway country is interested in Korea. But I agree with you, no one should think they’re superior because of the country they were born in.

    • Thats beautiful girl i support you infact african we are so hot if they did know hshahsha i have one korean guy that am driving jim craz anf soon take him home kenya africa so let them stop the nonsense they think we are its only colour upstrais ee smart.

  4. Am also a nigerian and i find it offensive that someone would think less about us just because of our nationality. i will never rubbish another person just because of where they are from, its unacceptable. my entire family love the korean culture (although what we know and understand about korea is from the media) and we respect what we believe to be other people’s culture. i would love to make friends with koreans and will not mind to be directed to a website or even where to mingle with them here in the uk.

  5. Comment made peoplw have thought i from all kind of countries.so i said not nigriean coz of it.so sometimes we dont understand why a person makes a coment right?

  6. Hello! I am a 19 year old Indonesian girl. 3 months ago I met a korean guy on some app on smartphone.we talked a lot..a lot and then this november he decided to come to my country and we spent 5 days together. in the first day, it was still awkward and then second day, when we were waiting for a bus at bus stop, we met an old Holland man. he asked me ” is he your husband? boyfriend?” “noo” then he asked him ” do you love her (me)?” and then said to me ” he said he loves you” since then when we were at a temple (we’re going to see a temple) he tried to hold my hands and yes I did, too. I wasn’t surprised because I think its because he just helped me. when we’re back in bus,he also held my hands and asked me ” can i use your shoulder?”. we kept holding hands in some mall. I felt something different. when we’re back to his hotel , in taxi he asked me again ” can I use your shoulder?” and again we held hands. he asked ” is it still far?” ” umm not really” ” good” ” why good?” ” i dont wanna stop” ” why dont wanna stop?” ” i felt comfortable ” i felt like oh i was surprised. when we walked around he always put his hands on my shoulder, too. the next day again in public bus, we lean each other, hugged and held hands like he really cared me and also at theater i tried to hug him because i felt so comfortable with him and again he hugged me back and we held hands along the movie. in the middle of the movie , there was a scene in which the actor said ” you are beautiful” and suddenly he said to me ” you are beautiful and cute , too” i just replied ” haha thank you”. he always looked at me and took pics of me without my knowing. he always said i am cute, too. the last day in station before leaving my city, I hugged him for very very short time because taxi was waiting for me and he said ” you go too fast T.T”

my question is do generally korean men do that? hold hands lean on shoulder say cute beautiful and so on? i mean do i have to worry whether he likes me or not? or is it just their culture so that i dont have to worry? because i heard its just their culture when they feel comfortable to people they would do that. because men here wouldnt do that if they dont love the girl. thank you!

  7. i was googling and i found this site !
wow so impressed i’m korean now living in California
if there is someone wants to learn korean i wanna share information!

  8. I also have a Korean boyfriend and we’re about to meet in a couple weeks time. He’s coming over to my country just to see me. We have been together since March and we call each other everyday and like you I have read a lot of negativities about having Korean bfs but I still took the risk because I really felt something real with him. I hope all the other girls here who has a korean bf now will not give up on their bfs just because they are scared of how they will end up.

My one cent is that Korean guys are not the only ones who can hurt girls all men is entitled to do that so don’t stereotype. If you feel that he is the right person for you just go for it. However, if you have this fantasy of meeting a Korean guy who are just like those dramas you watch then beware. No one is perfect don’t let your fantasy take over your reality that’s the key to your happiness.

We are already planning on getting married. He’s asked me almost everyday to marry him but I said I’m not ready and he does say he knows it but he just want to try ask as much as he can anyway =P

  9. Hello, Madame Oegukeen & Monsieur Kimchi Man.
I’m a Korean bloke. I’ve stumbled on to this very interesting site. Honestly, I’ve enjoyed this site: I thought that I would detest a narrative from women’s view-point. Thanks for sharing various stories about my country & heritage. I would love to help people if people would like to learn Korean.
