  3. Hi! I just came across this website and find it very interesting. I’ve read the comments and got to know many things I didn’t know before.
    This is my question:
I met this South Korean guy 1 month ago. He’s in my country learning my language (I’m Asian myself). I’m his teacher. There are more than 10 Korean students in may class. They are all young, funny and smart and they seem to enjoy learning with me a lot. Most of them are up to 10 years younger than me. However, he seems to be more interested in me than others. He constantly asks questions, smiles and jokes. I invited them over to my house and we had a great time together. At that time I didn’t pay much attention to him. I just had a feeling that he’s a handsome and nice guy. Later on, he asks me more questions about my life and said he also wanted to join some activities that I was doing, e.g. playing sports, etc. He also asked about my weekend plans and is always willing to do things I ask him to do. He’s also a great friend for my kids (I’m married with 2 kids). We began texting after he offered me his number and told me to call him anytime I want. The first messages were just “hello, thanks” for the time he spends with me playing sports or going to a cafe (with others, not just us). He once hit me accidentally when we were playing sports together and he was so scared about that. He offered to take me to hospital and then bought me some food to say sorry. When he saw my pain (the pain he cause), he said his heart aches. We spend time together quite often because I teach him almost every day and sometimes we eat out together with some others. Once he told me that he’d told his parents about me and showed me their picture. He also said his parents wanted to say hello and thank me. (I just didn’t do anything for him in particular). I also told him to send my regards to his parents and invite them to my country. He’s going to work in my country when the course finishes. He always tells me that he feels happy here and wants to live here. I don’t know when I started to develop feelings for him. Yes, he’s sweet, funny, handsome and smart but he’s too young. Furthermore, I’m married. I know it’s just some special feeling, can’t be love. But honestly, I want to see him and talk to him every day though we meet in class often but we don’t have much time to talk alone.
Sorry for the long question, but I’ve got a lot to ask. I know it’s not right to spend so much time with a man since I’m married. But whenever I can see him and talk with him, I feel so happy. When he comes over to my house, he always helps with everything and he acts very naturally as if he were a member of the family. I decided to tell him now that his parents know me, and we like spending time together like this, I can be his second family here. Then I can be his sister and he can call me nuna. He said he’s very thankful now that he has a second family in a foreign land.
I have to suppress my feelings for him whenever we meet. Sometimes I pretend to care more about others in my class than to him but deep in my heart I always want to get to his place. I know the “family thing” is just a silly excuse but I do want it to happen that way because I don’t want to lose him, but I can’t love him either.
The question is “What should I do in this situation?” I don’t want to lose him because he’s such a wonderful person. But I’m also afraid I’ll get deep into this relationship and can’t get out then it will be even worse.
One more thing, his birthday is coming and I want to do something special for him as a big sister. Shall I cook him the miyeok soup or just buy him some clothes? or shall I throw a party for him? I’m also afraid of other students’ gossiping about our relationship. So I’m very confused now.
Thank you so much for reading and I hope to get your reply soon.

      • Thank you for reading my message. These days I feel very stupid because I can’t stop thinking about him. I also think I should be cold towards him from now on to avoid getting further into this relationship. However, I don’t know how he will react when I behave in such a way because I’ve always been friendly and caring so far. I know my nature is very possessive, the reason why I get pissed off recently is that he didn’t reply my message on FB and I decided to erase all off his messages. But he’s not a FB person so I’m also not sure if he’s read my message or not. I don’t want to text him ‘cos it’s like stalking although he always replies when I text. I’m also discouraged about the birthday idea. I asked some of his friends about planning a BD party for him but they didn’t say anything. I feel hurt and want to give up everything – the class, the “family thing”, the birthday gift. I want to turn my back on them, all of them. Am I too extremist? His birthday is just in four days and I’m still very confused about what I should do. Please reply as soon as possible. Thank you so much and wish you happiness and luck with your relationship.

        • You seem to be infatuated with this young Korean man. It can happen to anyone, as we can’t control our feelings. But what we can control is our actions. Going against such strong emotions is really difficult and it is at such times that we define who we really are.

I think you don’t need me to tell you what the right thing to do is. You said it yourself, he is too young, you are married, and your instinct is telling you to be cold to him and pull away.

I am just a woman dating Korean guy. I think the reason why you are asking me for an advice in such a situation is because you don’t like any of the options you have. What you want is to be 10 years younger and not married. Unfortunately, no one can give you that. You are going to have to choose what you will give up and deal with the consequences.

I wish you all the best.

          • Thank you so much for your reply, oegukeen. I actually know what I should do. And you’re right about that I don’t like any of the options I think of. But I know what to choose and what to give up. It’s just that I was so confused. Anyway, it was just an infatuation and I know it will go as fast as it comes. I never think that I will give up my family. I just want to make everything as light- hearted as it could be, then we can smile and laugh together like we used to do. But it seems difficult now. Both of us (he and I) now have more sadness in our eyes, more hesitation in our gestures. I can’t stop seeing him because I have to teach him for some time more. And today I was very cold to him. He looked so sad but I guess that’s the way it should be.
His friends and I have planned a birthday party for him. I’ve bought him a cake and a present but I won’t be there at the party. I’m gonna delete his number and stop sending him messages. It’s sad but it’ll soon be over, I hope.
Thanks again and let me keep posting when something new comes along.

  4. Thank you, this has worked so well for me!
I’m the one from Yahoo Answers! And thanks to you, I can be sweet to my boyfriend!

Very useful, it would just be more awesome if we could copy and paste the korean writing, so that I can put it in Google Translate and listen to how it sounds xD

But I love it, thank you so much <3

    • You are very welcome, I am happy you found it helpful.

To be honest, we didn’t include it on purpose. It takes about 5 minutes to set up keyboard to type Korean on any device you are using to view this webpage right now. You don’t even need to know Hangul to type it.

And it takes a few hours to master the basics of Hangul and a few days to learn all of it. I really encourage EVERYONE to take a bit of their time and learn it if they want to use any Korean words. Imagine trying to speak English without being able to read this alphabet.

  5. I’ve recenty heard the word “imja” in the Korean drama “Faith”… I personally really like the sound of this word… So my question, would it be awkward to use this word nowadays in Korea? (not that I have a bf, crush or anything, just curious ^^)

    • 임자 (imja) means “owner” in Korean. People say it is for fun. Also a bit old fashioned but it won’t make some awkward situation, so if you like it you can use it ^^

    • Thank you. I hope we can make more too, but I need Kimchi Man’s help. He’s my Korean expert :) and he’s been in a difficult situation lately so I have to be patient.

  6. Thank you for these! I’m having fun practicing them – especially ‘you make my heart flutter’-it’s almost like a tongue twister. I have a question though. I noticed that some of the phrases are in formal language and I’ve noticed in dramas they tend to be in formal language too. My question is: why?? Yes, I get that there is more structured respect in language but surely, if you’re close enough to someone to ask for a hug or a kiss, you’d be close enough by that stage to not speak formally?

    • I’m glad they’re fun. :)

From what I understand, formality doesn’t always reflect how close you are to a person. For example, children need to speak respectfully to their parents or grandparents and use the formal versions even though they are obviously close to them and just want to tell them they love them.

However, I really think it’s better if Kimchi Man confirms this and explains it in more detail. Sadly, he’s very ill so please understand and thank you for your patience.

  7. Thanks for a quick reply either way. I suppose it’s just odd to me because I’ve never really had to use ‘formal’ language to anyone. oh and I wish Kimchi Man a speedy recovery! :)

  8. i have a korean boyfriend right now and i want to impress him.. he dont know how to speak english well..so some times he missed interpret me… i am glad that i found these flashcards:)

  9. hahahahah! This is nice! I’m actually a teacher and I have Korean boys in my class. They are ages 9 to 10 years old and they are so sweet! We have difficulties understanding each other at times because they are still learning the English language. When these boys find it difficult to express what they want to say, they always talk to me in Korean and that’s when my nose starts to bleed (if you know what I mean). However, because of this website I found out what those boys have been telling me for the past two weeks! hehehehe… They have been wanting to hug me, eh! (palm on my forehead)
